IN support of World Mental Health Day which falls in October, on Saturday, 15 September, from 10.30am until 4.30pm, Llangynllo Parish Church, lavishly decorated in time for its Harvest Thanksgiving the following day, is holding an awareness day to raise funds for Gofal, a leading Welsh mental health and wellbeing charity that supports over 2,000 people every year.
The aim of the day is to encourage people to think differently about mental health and wellbeing.
As well as a raffle and a tasty selection of food on offer throughout the day, there will be an exhibition by the Wildgoose Arts Group in support of this theme, featuring paintings by well-known local artists.
A talk at 11am entitled ‘Wellbeing through Nature’ and presented by Judie Coull and Kirsti Sivyer provides an informative and lively exploration into nature’s healing properties and how to have a more enhanced interaction with them.
This will be followed at 1pm with an illustrated talk by Nigel Pugh entitled ‘You don’t have to be mad to be an Artist...’ in which he explores the link between creativity and mental illness through the work of some famous artists.
On Sunday, 16 September, at 3.30pm the church will hold its annual Harvest Thanksgiving Service of Holy Communion led by Rev Gareth Reid with guest Rev Michael Ryall followed by a harvest tea in the marquee.
A special exhibition by Sue Wright on both days looks at how Harvest Thanksgivings at Llangynllo, Coed-y-bryn, were celebrated from the 19th century: aspects of which have been captured throughout the many carvings and embroideries to be found in the church.
