THE latest community news from Tywyn
Rotary Club
THE Rotary Club of Tywyn in co-operation with United Churches in Tywyn and Aberdyfi will mark historic progress toward a polio-free world while urging the community to help end this paralyzing disease.
Together with thousands of groups around the world, the Rotary Club and church members in Tywyn are taking action on World Polio Day, Thursday, 24 October, to raise awareness and support to end polio, a vaccine-preventable disease that still threatens children in parts of the world today.
When a child receives their life-saving polio drops on mass polio immunisation days in many countries, their little finger is painted with a purple dye so it is clear they have received their life saving vaccine.
For this reason, Rotary Club International has chosen the color purple to represent the charity, ‘End Polio Now’.
The residents of Tywyn and the United Churches in Tywyn and Aberdyfi in conjunction with the Rotary Club of Tywyn will be celebrating World Polio Day. The ‘Purple for Polio’ celebrations will be held in Tywyn and centered around St Cadfan’s Church, with a United Churches ‘Polio Awareness’ service at Tywyn Baptist Church.
A working party will be organized to plant 1,000 purple crocus corms in St Cadfan’s churchyard followed by the fitting of purple filters to the church floodlights.
They are also planning to hold a United Church service at the Baptist Church on Friday, 15 November (details to follow), to raise awareness of polio.
Before the service, there will be an introductory presentation by Rotary Club, deputy district governor, Richard Withers on the work that the club in conjunction with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation are doing to eradicate Polio from the world. All proceeds will be donated to the ‘End Polio Now’ campaign. Everyone is welcome to attend this service.
The United Churches of Tywyn and Aberdyfi together with The Rotary Club of Tywyn are committed to help to eradicate this paralyzing and tragic disease by increasing awareness and raising funds to help to eradicate polio from the whole world.
