GWYNEDD Council could be set to offload the management of Pwllheli marina and harbour amid “economic challenges” after a review was launched.

The review of the popular Hafan Pwllheli has been identified as one the council’s economic “priorities” for 2017/18.

The “comprehensive” review will “consider and assess different management models for its future”, but the council said that no decisions had yet been made.

Gwynedd Council took over the running of the Hafan from Yacht Haven Management in 2008 and has come in for criticism over the years for its running of the harbour, with complaints over a lack of dredging, investment and “long-term plan” to make the facility a success.

As of October 2016, 287 boats were on annual pontoon mooring at the Hafan - leaving it just 68 per cent full.

A report put before audit committee members on Thursday, said: “Since its construction, the Hafan has evolved into one of the best sailing destinations in Britain, and takes advantage of the outstanding sailing waters in Tremadog Bay. However, over recent years a number of challenges have become evident which could undermine the success.

“The economy and community department has already identified the need to carry out a comprehensive review to consider and assess different management models for its future."
