A little bit of Harlech history has been brought to life, thanks to an association in the town.
Harlech Tourism Association has worked hard on Meirion’s Trail, based on the legend of Meirion and his struggle to harness the power of the magical Harlech Torc.
Cllr Gwynfor Owen, who represents Harlech, has been finding out more about the trail from Harlech Tourism Association chairman, Graham Perch. The trail takes the form of five storytelling chairs spread out across two miles, and takes about an hour to complete.
“This is a brilliant initiative on behalf of Harlech Tourist Association and is of interest to locals and visitors alike,” said Cllr Owen.
“The author of the story is renowned local story teller Mair Tomos Ifans, and her storytelling skills are sure to capture the audience.”
Harlech Tourism Association has taken Mair’s version of the legend of Meirion to create the trail around the town. Visitors will hear about the Golden Torc and about the battle of Meirion and the Morfeirch (giant seahorses).
The story is split into five chapters, each chapter relating to a location and storytelling chair in Harlech. Chair number one is located at the children’s play park by Harlech Castle, with chair number five situated in the King George V playing field.
Each chair has a QR code that, when scanned, links to the Visit Harlech Meirion Trail webpage. Once the QR code is selected you can listen to the story for that chair by selecting the play option.
The directions between each chair are given at the end of each chapter and there is signage between chairs; blue signs with arrows and a picture of a seahorse head, fixed to posts around the trail.
There is a language option, allowing the listener to select the Welsh or English version of the story, along with an option to download a paper copy of the story for printing or reading as you follow the trail.
And there will be a new addition to the trail later this year when the Golden Torc goes on display from early April, 2022.
More information about the trail can be found at visitharlech.wales/meirion-trail.
