Madam,

I would like to correct some information given by Cllr Dyfed Edwards, leader of Gwynedd Council, in his letter - Gwynedd council continues to be among the best performing.

The leader informs us that the latest annual report detailing performance figures was published by the Welsh Government. Wrong!

This information is produced by the Local Government Data Unit. This Data Unit is a Welsh local government company with a board of directors on executive salaries.

Furthermore, when you look at the break-down of some areas, you see a different picture from that stated by Cllr Edwards. For instance, on page five of this same document, Gwynedd comes in last place for overall condition of roads and, in eight per cent of the indicators, Gwynedd performed worse than last year.

I am more than sure that, had the Welsh Assembly produced the document, Gwynedd would not be in fourth position, bearing in mind its lack of toilet provision, swimming facilities not available for all, tourist information offices closed, grass cutting reduced, cuts here, there and everywhere.

One point on which I would agree with Cllr Edwards, it does show the dedication of his staff because they are the front line whom we all have to approach and they are the ones helping sort the day-to-day problems. It is not the councillors’ dedication that helps maintain the services - they are the ones who disposed of them in the first place!

Yours etc,

O Jean Thomas, Cae Garw, Llanfair.
