ABERYSTWYTH University has started selling off its empty buildings after the Cambrian News revealed it owned 18 properties which had been empty for 100 years combined.

The university, which only last month announced a further 11 job losses on top of the 40 already shed to make £6m of savings this year, has put two of its properties — Cwrt Villa in Penrhyncoch and Ynys Werdd in Lluest — up for sale.

A total of 150 jobs are under threat at the university after new vice-chancellor Elizabeth Treasure identified the need to make savings of £11.4m to stave off “serious financial problems”.

University staff have been warned that as part of this year’s savings target, more jobs will have to be lost in five departments — Theatre, TV and Film Studies; Education; IBERS; Information Services; and Planning.

The university said it was hoped that compulsory redundancies could be avoided.

Cwrt Villa, a three-bedroom grade-II listed building, is being advertised by Aled Ellis & Co estate agents with a guide price of £160,000.

And Ynys Werdd, a detached three-bedroom house also advertised with Aled Ellis, has a guide price of £185,000.

The cash-strapped university has also revealed it is planning to sell 9 Laura Place, a Grade II listed house which has been left empty for six years; 1 and 2 Marine Terrace, a pair of seafront Grade II listed buildings empty for eight years; and 2 King Street, also empty for eight years.
