ABERYSTWYTH University has approved a plan to refurbish a prominent tower on campus.
The university’s council gave the go ahead to spend £1.1m on refurbishing the exterior of Llandinam Tower - a central landmark on Penglais campus, currently part of the Geography and Earth Science department.
A report put before council members by the Finance and Strategy Committee said the tower was an integral part of the university.
“Members recognised the central location of the Llandinam Tower on campus and the likely role that the building would play in the University’s future estate requirements.
“Members therefore recommended that the refurbishment work be approved by council.”
The work on the tower, set to be completed before September will involve “essential concrete repairs”, a new roof surface, and replacing the windows.
The report said that “undertaking all external repairs at the same time would be the most cost-effective option and would be good for at least 10 years”.
The report added: “The university’s investment over-recent years now means that it has some of the best centrally-timetabled teaching rooms in the sector.”
