A decision to bring the National Eisteddfod to Llyn should provide the area with a “major economic boost”.

That’s the view of the Efailnewydd councillor Anwen Davies following last week’s announcement by festival bosses that the 2021 Eisteddfod will be held at Boduan, near Pwllheli.

Cllr Davies, who represents the community of Efailnewydd a Buan on Gwynedd Council, is delighted that the area will play host to Europe’s largest festival of competitive music and poetry which typically attracts over 150,000 visitors a year.

“This is fantastic news for the area and will truly put us on the map,” she said.

“What I’m especially delighted about is that the eisteddfod is coming to rural Wales.

“I was at the site this morning and am pleased to say that it’s flat and the drainage is excellent, which are two all-important factors for any Eisteddfod! Its 10 minutes from Pwllheli and the far west of Pen Llyn is less than half an hour away, so hopefully the whole area will benefit from the influx of visitors.

“Now it’s a matter of sorting out the arrangements and fundraising over the next 18 months, but I couldn’t be happier.”

Also welcoming the news was Cllr Dyfrig Siencyn, the leader of Gwynedd Council who said: “We are very pleased to welcome the National Eisteddfod to Gwynedd in 2021.

“This is the first time for the festival to visit the Dwyfor area since 1987, and I’m confident our local communities will ensure it’s an Eisteddfod to remember.

“Of course, thousands of people will flock here to compete or enjoy the festival during the week, and it’s our aim to celebrate our culture and everything we are proud of in Gwynedd.

“As a council, we have helped the Eisteddfod to identify possible sites, and we are pleased that they are announcing that Boduan will be home to the festival in two years’ time.

“There is, of course, lots of work to do before then, and we are looking forward to working together, planning and preparing for the event between now and August 2021.”

The area’s MP, Liz Saville Roberts said that it was “great news for Ll?n and Eifionydd,” and that “now the fundraising effort will begin.”
