A Ceredigion artist who succeeded in getting his work known throughout Wales is now reaching the world stage at a global art event in Switzerland.
Ten new canvases by Wynne Melville Jones (Wyn Mel), will be exhibited at Europes largest Art Fair SWISS ART EXPO in Zurich from 2-6 September.
“This is a fresh opportunity and challenge, beyond my wildest dreams,” said Wyn, who works from his studio at his home in Llandre.
After college, Wyn established himself as one of the leading public relations and marketing experts in Wales. He set up his own company and pioneered bilingual services in Wales.
Wyn’s most popular creation is Mistar Urdd, the personification of the youth organisation’s triangular badge.
On retirement Wyn Mel returned to his first love – art, and erected a purpose-built studio in his garden
The response was promising from the start and he soon started sharing his work at small galleries locally.
He currently exhibits his work at a selection of the finest art galleries in Wales and is proud that his paintings have been well received at established galleries including
Oriel Rhiannon Tregaron, Harbour Lights Gallery Porthgain, Albany Gallery Cardiff, Oriel Canfas Gallery Cardigan, Celf yn y Plu Feathers Hotel Aberaeron, Queen Street Gallery Neath, and Lion Street Gallery Hay-on-Wye. He has also exhibited work at the London Welsh Centre in Grays Inn Road. Items of his work have been acquired by collectors in Mumbai, USA, Germany and Scandinavia
His picture of the isolated chapel of Soar-y-Mynydd near Tregaron was owned by former US President Jimmy Carter and his depiction of the Elvis Rock, Eisteddfa Gurig is at Graceland, Tenesseee.
A book of his work containing over 100 plates of his artwoks - ‘Paintings of Wales’ – was published some time ago, and some of his paintings have been adapted as book covers including ‘Blodeugerdd Waldo’, edited by Eirwyn George to celebrate the poetry of Waldo Williams, who was considered to be one of the most important poets in Europe.
Since the beginning of this year, Wyn has been working with a Swiss-based company who specialise in marketing art.
Items of his work have already been displayed digitally at art events in European cities such as Cologne, Milan, Berlin and Paris
“Since my return to painting it is true to say that I have been actively painting almost every day for 15 years,” Wyn said.
“This project offers an opportunity for me to share my enjoyment and pleasure in a much broader market, in a new world and to take a taste of little known Wales to people all over the globe”, he said.
“Welsh people, or anyone interested in Wales and Welsh art now living within close proximity of Wyn’s work in Zurich are warmly invited to visit him at the exhibition, to enjoy the artworks, and to join him at the Art Party at 6.30pm on Saturday, 5 September at Wannerhalle, the main station in Zurich.
Guests attending the party need to inform Wyn in advance. Admission is free to both the exhibition and party.
