A band with deep roots in the music and landscape of west Wales return to Cardigan this September.

Swamptalk reunite on 19 September (8pm) for a special night of live music, dancing and reconnection at Small World Theatre.

Originally formed in west Wales in the late 1970s and 80s, Swamptalk developed a distinctive sound blending funky rock, jazzy overtones and blues, performing locally and further afield. They released their single, ‘Positive Movement’, in November 1979.

Now, more than four decades after their early gigs at The Shed in Dolwilym, original members Bruce Knapp (guitar), Paul Bennett (bass) and Consi Handelsman (vocals) are coming together again. Travelling from New York, London and elsewhere, they will return to the area that played such an important part in their musical lives.

They will be joinedby Geoff Nicholls (drums), Phil Layton (percussion) and Carolyn Burnett (vocals), with the possibility of a surprise guest or two.

Swamptalk’s story is inseparable from the Preseli landscape, where the band forged deep musical connections and lifelong friendships. This special performance is an opportunity to revisit those roots, celebrate old connections and create new ones — connections that, as the band puts it, are “tattooed on their hearts and minds.”

Although the members haven’t performed together for decades, music has remained a constant in all their lives. Each has continued making music in their own way, and they have now brought their collective experience, enthusiasm and musical chops together to create a set of jazzy, funky blues.

Road-worn but with undiminished energy, Swamptalk are looking forward to making music together again — and to sharing the experience with friends old and new.

The evening will begin with three 10-minute open mic slots, giving local performers the chance to take the stage before Swamptalk’s set.

Interested performers should contact Helene ([email protected]) before 14 September to book a slot.
