Once again we see extensive flooding across parts of England and Wales.
The Welsh Government is quoted as saying that we must stop development on flood plains as one way to keep property safe.
This policy actually already exists in Welsh Planning Policy Technical Advice Note TAN15 which requires that any development on category C flood plains should only be permitted in exceptional circumstances and if no alternative exists.
Flood plains are important as they allow rivers to overflow in a controlled way without damaging other areas.
What utter folly then that Gwynedd Council proposes to develop a category C flood plain in Llanbedr by building a bypass on it.
Not only is this totally against Welsh Government policy in TAN15 but the water displaced by the footprint of the bypass will flood properties that currently do not normally flood.
Climate change means flooding will get worse in future. We must not do anything that exacerbates the problem.
Ditch the bypass, provide off road parking and improve the existing roads and pedestrian walkways.
