Gwynedd Council is asking residents for their thoughts on the future of Caernarfon’s flyover.

The A487 through Caernarfon, currently a trunk road, is the responsibility of the Welsh Government, but once the new Bontnewydd and Caernarfon bypass opens, the existing road will become the council’s responsibility.

As part of the preparations for this transfer, discussions are ongoing with the government regarding the transfer of ownership for the road which includes the structure of the flyover in Caernarfon.

Cllr Gareth Griffith said: “When the new bypass opens, we are likely to see a reduction in traffic travelling along the old road. It’s therefore timely that we seriously think about what we want to see happen to the flyover.

“It can offer opportunities to enhance the landscape of the area and offer new active travel provision that would include improved pedestrian links to the town centre.

“There are a number of different options under consideration which include keeping the existing flyover without changing the order of things as they are, or keeping it and making different use of the existing flyover - for example a green bridge. There is also the possibility of completely removing the flyover and to consider changing the nearby roundabout.

“We are very keen to find out the local community’s feelings about the future of the structure and a survey is open until 1 November to hear the views of local residents and relevant organisations. The comments that will be presented will help us in planning for the future and in considering any potential funding applications that may be needed in the future.”
