KIND-HEARTED schoolchildren have been learning how to make life easier for those living with dementia.

With Dementia Action Week held from 21 to 25 May, pupils from Ysgol y Gorlan in Tremadog have recently been learning about the condition and little things that people can do to help support people living with dementia.

Pupils from Year 3 to 6 took part in the Dementia Friends sessions which were delivered by Emma Quaeck, Gwynedd Council’s DementiaGo project manager.

She said: “By helping to raise awareness with children about this disease we can help to remove the stigma that comes along with dementia.”

Following the information session, Year 5 and 6 pupils then attended the DementiaGo activity class at the council’s nearby Glaslyn Leisure Centre where they had the opportunity to meet people living with dementia whilst taking part in physical activity with them.

Emma added: “The response from the children was unbelievable. They were so caring and wanted to get to know our regular class members. One of the pupils asked if he could join the class every week when he’s not in school.

“The adults thoroughly enjoyed having the children in the class. It was a joy to see everyone working together and it’s certainly something we’d like to do more of with other schools.”
