Over 3,000 new cases of coronavirus and 11 deaths have been recorded across Wales today.

Daily figures released by Public Health Wales show that 3,296 new cases of Covid-19 have been recorded with the national rate of infection rising to 681.9 cases per 100,000 population.

Of the new cases recorded today, 68 have been in Ceredigion, with Gwynedd recording 78 cases, Powys, 113, Carmarthenshire, 179 and Pembrokeshire, 178.

The latest cases mean that since last Friday, Ceredigion has recorded 386 new cases of Covid-19, with the county council warning today that numbers are expected to rise to levels never seen before.

Both Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire have recorded over 1,000 new cases each over the last seven days, with 1,159 recorded in Carmarthenshire and 1,084 in Pembrokeshire.

Two of the 11 deaths recorded across Wales today have been in the Hywel Dda Health Board region of Ceredigion, Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire.

The total number of suspected Covid-19 deaths in west Wales now stands at 551.

Two deaths have also been recorded in Betsi Cadwaladr Health Board’s region of north Wales, taking its death toll to 1,064

No new deaths have been recorded in Powys, with the death toll remaining at 76.

The total number of deaths from Covid-19 in Wales currently stands at 6,074.

Ceredigion County Council issued a warning over a rise in cases in the county earlier today, with particular concern over the Aberystwyth area.

The council said that case rates are “currently very high and are increasing daily” and warned that community transmission needed to be reduced “to ensure that our schools can reopen fully after half-term”.

“We are specifically concerned regarding the increasing infection rates in the Aberystwyth area,” the council added.

The council is urging residents to “think about who you are meeting and where” during the October half-term break next week.
