Speaking this lunchtime, Mr Drakeford said that one in 40 people in Wales now has the coronavirus and the number of people dying from the disease is on the up.

He said the rise in cases is likely down to the spread among young people and confirmed that cases of a new variant already detected in Wales.

Mr Drakeford said: “We need to take more action now to strengthen the measures we have in place at alert level zero to prevent coronavirus spreading even further and more people falling seriously ill.

“None of us wants to see a return to restrictions but if rates continue to rise, the cabinet will have no choice but to consider raising the alert level at the next review.”

The next review takes place on 19 November and the next level up, alert level one, would mean nightclubs would have to close, restrictions on how many people you can meet indoors, extended household bubbles and travel restrictions.
