BRONGLAIS Hospital is getting a new unit designed to help elective surgery during the winter, a new MRI scanner and interviews are being planned for new consultants.

Peter Skitt, the Ceredigion county director for Hywel Dda Health Board, said progress was being made on a range of issues in Bronglais and said that the developments were good news for the hospital and services provided there.

As well as the new scanner, new unit and applications for consultant roles, he said a long-awaited review into colorectal services had been completed and a proposal for the future should be released publicly soon.

Speaking at a meeting of the Mid Wales Healthcare Collaborative, Mr Skitt said the new unit planned for the winter would help to reduce cancelled operations during the winter.

He said: “We’ve got an escalation area that’s been created in Bronglais for the winter. That has not been there previously.

“It’s caused disruption to waiting lists and operations in the past but we are now putting a six-bedded unit into Bronglais in a specific urge area to enable elective care to continue and allow emergency care to be provided in an efficient way in the future.”

There has also been progress in a new MRI scanner being installed in Bronglais after funding for the development was agreed by the Welsh Government.
