A university library will be used as a mass vaccination centre from this weekend, council chiefs said today.
The Sir Thomas Parry Library on Aberystwyth University’s Llanbadarn campus is to be used as a vaccination centre, with health and care staff receiving their jabs later this week before the general public will be invited to attend from this weekend.
Councillors at Ceredigion County Council’s full meeting were told the news today after concerns were raised over the speed of the vaccine rollout in the north of the county.
Council leader Cllr Ellen ap Gwynn updated members on the current figures of Covid-19 cases in the county.
Cllr ap Gwynn said the numbers she had seen this morning show “we seem to be going in the correct direction”.
There were 113 cases over the last seven days, she said, compared to 127 the previous seven days, “so the numbers are reducing slowly”.
She said there were currently 10 people in Bronglais Hospital with the virus, adding she hoped that did not increase.
However, residents must not “lapse” and ensure to continue wearing masks, social distancing and washing hands.
Cllr Maldwyn Lewis relayed concerns he had received from Bronglais about about the time it was taking to roll out the Covid-19 vaccine and the lack of a north county centre.
He was told that Hywel Dda Health Board intended to use the old library at Llanbadarn campus for vaccinations this weekend and once health and care staff were dealt with it was possible it may be used for the public.
Cllr ap Gwynn added that an issue with a batch of vaccine had been resolved and more provision was being provided in the area by GPs, which would increase over coming weeks.
