BREXIT could affect the future of Welsh television, according to the cast and crew of Hinterland.

The detective series filmed on location in Ceredigion received European funding for both its first and third series. Without that initial investment, Hinterland, (Y Gwyll in Welsh), may never have been made.

“European funding was vital to the first series of Hinterland,” the show’s co-creator and producer Ed Talfan said.

“It’s great that everyone has a view on Europe but, to me, it’s an unhelpful step to be Brexiting. With Europe it felt like we had another friend and to have that door shut feels like a backward step.

“On the third series, because we were up and running, I think we may have been able to get the money from elsewhere, but certainly with the first series, European funding was vital.”

He went on: “Will a lack of EU funding stop things being made? I don’t think so, but it makes life harder for producers. EU funding makes things feel more possible so this feel like a retrograde step.”
