As an English engineering tradesman I arrived in Port Talbot over 50 years ago, and a fellow workmate gave me Rape of the Fair Country by Alexander Cordell.

My children went to a bilingual school in Swansea that was so rich in music that some times my heart was bursting at choir concerts.

I remember to this day the anger I felt when I stood in that little classroom at St Fagans, and discovered how innocent school children were punished for speaking Welsh, and I was ashamed.

Cllr Tony Jones was present when Powys County Council voted to proceed with a consultation process on a proposal to change Ysgol Bro Hyddgen, Machynlleth, to a Welsh medium school(Cambrian News, 10 December). He thought the matter was a done deal, and is very unhappy that some parents are pleading for the school to remain bilingual.

I think Cllr Jones might benefit from feeling some of the shame that engulfed me all those years ago, and allow our two languages to thrive side by side, in speech, music, and brotherhood.
