Madam,

A story about bee-friendly Wales was highlighted on television. The example cited was Steepholm, where less mowing was now practised and it was stated that it was hoped the practice would be followed by local councils across Wales.

It would be wonderful if marginal areas could be left to produce their natural weed-rich resources instead of forever being “tidied” unnecessarily, which destroys important habitat just as badly as elsewhere the Amazon rainforest is being destroyed.

How can we deplore that when daily here we do the same?

Bees adore valerian and hawkweeds, Peacock butterflies lay their eggs on nettles, one could go on...

But I hope that I have said enough to make people think twice about destroying even the smallest area of natural habitat and instead value them for what they represent, more insects, more pollinators.

Yours etc, Sue Passmore, New Quay.
