A PENRHYNDEUDRAETH mother is calling for an urgent safety assessment to be carried out on a junction where her 10-year-old son was hit by a car.

Haydn Roberts was airlifted to hospital last year following a collision on the A487 junction in Penrhyndeudraeth.

Calls are now being made by local councillor Gareth Thomas for the Welsh Government to carry out a safety assessment after another young child was almost hit at the site only two weeks ago.

Cllr Gareth Thomas, who represents Penrhyndeudraeth on Gwynedd Council, has already called for the Welsh Government to look at the safety of pedestrians crossing the A487 junction near Deudraeth Garage following the incident involving Haydn back in March 2015.

Haydn’s mother, Rachel Owen, is also calling for the road to be made safer for the public.

She said: “It was a living nightmare when we arrived at the scene to see our son involved in this collision that day – every parent’s worst fear.

“Thankfully, Haydn was extremely fortunate that he had no long-lasting injuries.

A Welsh Government spokesperson said: “Our Trunk Road Safety Review recommended engineering works to be considered at this location in 2017/18. This will include an investigation of traffic movements at two A487 junctions following the opening of Pont Briwet.”
