WORK on a new footpath across a “dangerous” narrow bridge in Bow Street has been completed.

Following the successful award of funding from the Welsh Government’s Safe Routes in Communities scheme, Ceredigion County Council has recently completed construction of a new footway to create a safe route between Bryncastell estate and Ysgol Rhydypennau school in Bow Street.

The county council has worked in partnership with Network Rail, and a local landowner to obtain the required land, to install the new path with new safety barrier fencing.

In addition, a wider section of carriageway has also been created to accommodate a new formal traffic priority system for vehicles negotiating the narrow rail bridge.

Rhodri Llwyd, Ceredigion County Council highways group manager, said: “Historically, this section of road over the narrow railway bridge has been dangerous for motorists and pedestrians alike, and we hope this new road layout will improve safety for users of this road.

“We have also created a pedestrian section on the bridge, which is highlighted by red High Friction Surfacing to help delineate this to motorists; but pedestrians should always exercise caution when crossing this narrow bridge.”

This work is part of a two-year programme to make safer pedestrian routes to connect with Rhydypennau primary school in Bow Street.

Last year, the council completed a link from Llandre to Rhydypennau primary school and a new cycle shelter and scooter rack was also installed at the school to encourage pupils to make more active travel journeys.
