THE Welsh Government has come under fire after road users were subjected to maintenance work at a roundabout on the Dolgellau bypass.
Traffic has built up in the area due to re-surfacing work at the new roundabout joining the A470 and the A493 after it was found to be unfit for purpose and needed to be relaid.
The roundabout, which was only completed in May, is located only a few hundred feet away from another roundabout on the A470, linking to the A494, which was completed in 2016 – and which also needed resurfacing just a few weeks later.
The remedial work on the latest roundabout started last Monday and is expected to last for approximately two weeks.
The Cabinet secretary for economy and infrastructure Ken Skates admitted the additional roadworks were “regrettable” but maintained that road safety was always a “primary concern”.
Plaid Cymru Mid and West AM Simon Thomas was outraged at further delays and roadworks on the Dolgellau bypass and slammed both the Welsh Government and the contractors responsible for the project.
“It is disconcerting that having identified a similar problem with the other roundabout along the Dolgellau stretch of the A470, the Labour Government did not immediately take steps to ensure the same thing would not happen again.
“Not only should the contractors pay the costs of remedial work for not doing the work to standard in the first place, they should also make a donation to the community in Dolgellau who will once again suffer delays and frustration.”
When asked about the upheaval, Mr Skates said: “This is regrettable, but the safety of the road will always be our primary concern."
