A former Aberystwyth scientist has been formally installed as a traditional chief in south western Nigeria.

Professor Michael Abberton, IITA Director, West Africa Hub, Crop Improvement, has been installed the Atayese of Ise-Ekiti, Nigeria for his outstanding leadership, unwavering commitment to agricultural research, and dedication to improving livelihoods through science and innovation and the commitment to community development.

Professor Abberton was formerly the head of plant breeding at IBERS near Penrhyncoch and still has strong ties to Aberystwyth.

The professor was joined by family in July when he was conferred as a chieftain by His Royal Majesty the Arinjale of Ise Ekiti, Dr Oba Adetunj Ayodele David Ajayi, Aweloye II.

The title of Atayese places Professor Abberton within the traditional hierarchy of Ise Ekiti, a role that carries both prestige and responsibility in the cultural life of the kingdom.

Professor Abberton joined the Institute of Grassland and Environmental Research (IGER) in 1993.

For a number of years he carried out research and breeding in forage legumes and became Head of the Plant Genetics and Breeding Department at IGER. Following merger with Aberystwyth University in 2008 [creating the Institute of Biological, Environmental and Rural Sciences (IBERS)] he became Professor of Public Good Plant Breeding and Director of International Development.

He became the Head of the Bioscience Center, IITA, Ibadan in August 2012.

Speaking on the honour, Professor Abberton said: “With immense appreciation to the good people of Ise-Ekiti, whose enduring legacy has brought us to this remarkable day, I humbly accept the honour of Chief Atayese of Ise-Ekiti.

“I am sincerely grateful to the kingmakers, our elders, religious leaders, youth, women, the sons and daughters of Ise-Ekiti at home and in the diaspora, as well as all friends and wellwishers who have stood by me throughout this journey.

“Your prayers, encouragement, support, and goodwill have strengthened me, and I deeply cherish the confidence you have reposed in me.

“As I accept this revered chieftaincy title, I do so with a heart of humility. This title is not merely a symbol of honour; it is a sacred trust that calls for wisdom, integrity, compassion, and selfless service.

“Let us remain united in purpose, promote

peace and harmony, empower our youth, support our men, women, encourage education, attract meaningful investment, and work collectively towards the social and economic advancement of our beloved town.

“In particular I hope that agriculture and food security can be strengthened I call upon every indigene, resident, and friend of Ise-Ekiti to join hands in building a stronger, more prosperous, peaceful, and united community.

“May we have peace in our land, wisdom in our decisions, abundance in our homes, and continued progress for Ise-Ekiti.

“Thank you for the confidence you have placed in me. With your unwavering support, I am confident that the best days of Ise-Ekiti are still ahead of us.”

Professor Abberton’s son, Jahsyl paid tribute to his dad, saying: “Let me first congratulate you on this amazing achievement on becoming Chief Atayese of Ise Ekiti.

“This is a well-deserved title for a remarkable man.

“You’ve truly outdone yourself in so many ways. You’ve never melted under pressure and have never let anything harden you.

“Your courage and understanding have always shone through.

“Your unpretentious decency and kindness define you.

“Your ferocious work ethic, moral fibre and unwavering faith in goodness are unshakeable.

“Raising two young boys at such a young age as a single father while working fulltime at IGER and having a part-time job at Aberystwyth Pier to ensure we’re cared for is a true blessing.

“You’ve never buckled under pressure, lashed out in frustration or lost your temper.

“You’ve always been focused, calm and doing what’s right.

“You’ve never let us or anyone in your life down.

“You’ve never been selfish; you’ve always put others’ needs first and never

asked for anything in return.

“You’re truly an inspiration to all and an exceptional man. I am the man I am today because of you. I am very proud to be your son.

“We as a family are incredibly proud of you and the remarkable work you do in Africa and around the world. You’re a tribute to your mum and dad, and they’ll be so very proud of you.

“We truly appreciate your unwavering support, your caring nature and the love you’ve shown to us and everyone around you.

“I’m delighted to be part of this momentous occasion with you. Your elevation to this title is a well-deserved testament to your integrity wisdom and lifelong dedication to science.

“May your reign be long peaceful and blessed with abundant wisdom.”

His other son Ishmael and granddaughter, Malia, said: “Malia and I would like to sincerely congratulate you on your remarkable achievement. Your new title is a well deserved tribute to your tireless dedication to empowering others and strengthening the community.

“Your children, grandchildren, and future generations are proud of you.

“We as your family, and surely your colleagues have every confidence that you will continue to lead with wisdom, compassion, and grace.

“This prestigious honour is not only a symbol of royal recognition, but also a fitting reward for your generous heart and selfless service to humanity. May your reign be distinguished by a lasting legacy, prosperity, and unity.”

His Royal Majesty, Oba (Dr.) Adetunji Ayodele David Ajayi, Aweloye II also paid tribute, saying: “On behalf of myself and the entire family, we would like to extend our heartfelt congratulations on your well-deserved conferment of the prestigious chieftaincy title, Atayese of Ise-Ekiti.

“We are incredibly proud of your achievements and your exceptional contributions to science and humanity.

“The world is undoubtedly a better place with your presence.

“This honour stands as a testament to your outstanding character, your dedication to research development, exemplary leadership, and unwavering commitment to helping others. Your elevation to this esteemed position reflects the deep respect, trust, and admiration you have earned through years of selfless service.

“You have worked tirelessly to ensure food security and to improve the lives of others.

“Your talents go beyond expectation. Despite many challenges along your journey, you have shown remarkable strength, courage, and determination to excel in your field.

“This is what makes you one of the greatest scientists in agricultural research, biodiversity conservation, and food security.

“May the Almighty God continue to bless you with robust health, and may your reign be marked by peace, success, and remarkable achievements. We wish you continued strength, good health, and guidance.”

The Atayese title is the latest accolade Professor Abberton has received.

In 2025, he received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Nigerian Plant Breeders Association for dedicating his career to conserving Africa’s rich plant genetic resources and making them available for crop improvement, unlocking resilience, nutrition, and food security.
