An Aberystwyth businesswoman has been overwhelmed by support received following the announcement that her shop will close.

Lotty Riggs, who owns bag shop Kitty Fisher on Pier Street, announced the closure on Facebook on Wednesday, 19 August, and received dozens of messages of support within just a few hours.

The shop owner, who says she gets called Kitty a lot, gave a detailed explanation of why her shop will shut. The post, reads: “After a lot of thought, I’ve made the very difficult decision to close Kitty Fisher.

“Over the last four years, starting on Eastgate and then two years ago moving to Pier Street, this little shop has been such a huge part of my life, and I honestly can’t put into words how grateful I am to everyone who has supported me along the way.

“From the customers who walked through the door, the regulars who became friends, the lovely messages, recommendations and shares, to everyone who has chosen to shop local and support an independent business — thank you.

“I’ve had some amazing memories, met some wonderful people and been incredibly proud to have Kitty Fisher as part of the Aberystwyth high street. And, of course, Bertie has been part of the journey too!

“I’ve been approached about an exciting opportunity in my previous sector and have now been offered a Head of Department role, working on a hybrid basis. It’s simply too good of an opportunity to turn down, and after a lot of thought, I’ve decided it’s the right time for me to take that next step.

“Being self-employed and running the shop on my own over the last four years has meant working seven days a week. Although I’ve loved every minute of building Kitty Fisher, this new opportunity also gives me something incredibly precious — more time for my family and the people I love most.

“As I’ve started my new role sooner than originally planned, our shop opening times may vary over the coming weeks. I’ll do my very best to keep Kitty Fisher open as much as possible, but please check our Facebook page for the latest opening times before making a special journey.

“And just to reassure everyone — Bertie and I are staying in Aberystwyth! We’ll remain very much part of the community, and I’ll continue to champion our wonderful independent shops, support the local high street and proudly keep waving the independent shops flag wherever I can!

“I’ll be making the most of the time we have left, so please pop in, say hello, have a browse and grab yourself a bargain.

“Kitty Fisher will always hold a very special place in my heart.

“Thank you, Aberystwyth, for four incredible years of support, kindness and encouragement.

“One chapter closes and another very exciting one begins.”

Speaking to the ‘Cambrian News’, Lottie said: “I’m feeling very over welcomed with all the best wishes and lovely comments from all about the shop me and Bertie so thank you.”

Lottie said the shop will close within the next three months.
