PINK scarecrows and other characters have been springing up all over the small Teifi Valley village of Betws Ifan.

Drivers have been slowing down as they pass through to get a good look at the eccentric creatures and locals are so pleased with the project they have decided to make the character competition an annual event.

Ranging from depictions of whole families to TV personalities and traditional scarecrows the characters are part of a ‘be proud of your community’ project run by the village committee.

Some 26 out of 52 village households took part and the results of their handiwork were displayed outside their properties last week.

They were judged by Cllr Lyndon Lloyd and the winners were presented with a shield at the community fete on Saturday.

They were Shelagh and Roger Stevens, of Gorwel, who are pictured with their creation, Mrs Bucket (or Bouquet) and the Betws Ifan Community Hall Award.

Committee chairwoman Marian Evans said: “We have been so pleased by the fantastic response to this competition. The aim was to show how proud we are of our village and to make it stand out."
