THE Welsh Government is investigating after a large residential development on the site of an old chapel in Aberystwyth was found to have breached plans.
The planning application by Mid Wales Housing to build 22 affordable residential units across four storeys at the old Tabernacle Chapel site on Powell Street, which the Welsh Government First Minister Carwyn Jones visited in October, was approved in February 2014.
But the development has been criticised by town councillors after it was announced the development has overstepped the extent of original plans by extending onto a pavement in Mill Street.
Speaking at a meeting of Aberystwyth Town Council last week, Cllr Ceredig Davies said the Welsh Government was aware of the issue.
“The Welsh Government is looking into the issue as the development extends over the pavement more than what the plan had granted,” Cllr Davies announced.
Cllr Jeff Smith, who is also chair of the planning committee, said: “The Welsh Government has sent officers to assess the development and they agree that the building is not as it should be. They have said that they expect the developers to put a new application in and then the Welsh Government and Trunk Roads Agency will consider it.
“We have had correspondence from Ceredigion County Council saying they are discussing the issue.”
