CEREDIGION councillors have come under fire after signing the death warrant for the Bodlondeb care home in Penparcau.
Elwyn Williams, the vice-chairman of the Save Bodlondeb campaign, said the decision by members of the Healthier Communities Scrutiny Committee to accept the Cabinet decision to close the home and not refer the issue to the full council was disappointing.
He said the decision meant that the two Penparcau councillors had been denied a vote on the future of the home which will now close in March, if not before.
Mr Williams said: “I feel strongly that all 42 members of the council should have had a vote. The two local members in Penparcau didn’t have a vote and they should have done. How can councillors not living in the area decide on what should happen to a care home in Aberystwyth when the two local councillors in Penparcau didn’t have a vote and were denied that by a councillor from Aberystwyth.”
Aberystwyth North councillor Mark Strong backed the Cabinet decision to close the home, with Aberystwyth Bronglais councillor Alun Williams, who is a member of the council Cabinet, also supporting closure.
Mr Williams said: “I’m very surprised with the elected member of Aberystwyth North ward that he voted not to refer it to the full council. He changed his mind.
“I’m also surprised that the Cabinet member who represents Bronglais ward voted for closure.”
