Lampeter Town Council may be making a return to its ‘spiritual home’ following a lapse of well over 40 years.

The authority – which currently meets in the Victoria Hall – has been offered a first-floor room at Lampeter Town Hall, former headquarters of the old Lampeter Borough Council prior to local government reorganisation in 1974.

Town mayor Cllr Ann Bowen Morgan said the offer had arisen following the closure of the Welsh Quilt Centre, run by Jen Jones.

“This back room would be very suitable for us as a town council to rent out,” said Cllr Morgan.

“The council’s chairs and exhibition boards are currently in storage over at the university.

“I would like a small sub-committee to discuss this matter with Jen Jones although we obviously would not move there unless we felt the terms were right.”

However, Cllr Hag Harris questioned whether such a potential move was necessary.

“We were not looking for such a room when this approach was made,” he said.

“There’s nothing wrong with taking a look at this but do we actually need to rent a room?

“I also think it’s a misnomer to suggest we’re going back to our rightful home because we haven’t used the town hall since the old borough council days of the 1970s.”

Cllr Harris also argued that every pound spent on the rental of such a room was "one pound less" that could be spent on the local community.

It was agreed to form a sub-committee which would report back to full council on the pros and cons of such a move.
