Two of North Wales’ top tourist attractions have been named in the top 10 ‘lesser-known locations’ in the UK.

Portmeirion was named second best place to visit in the list, missing out on the top spot to Craigievar Castle in Scotland.

Snowdon came sixth place in the list, which has been put together by Sony Mobile and Lonely Planet.

As international travel continues to stay under review, travel guide publisher, Lonely Planet, saw a significant rise in people staycationing; as well as an increase in interest in travel to off the beaten track destinations throughout 2020.

Sony Mobile and Lonely Planet have paired up to publish a photo series revealing the top 10 unfrequented destinations in the UK for 2021 so travellers can escape the mundane of lockdown once measures have been fully lifted and reignite the sense of wonder and discovery.

Staycationers often opt for big cities and forget there’s a whole country out there to explore.

The top 10 off the beaten track destinations from around the UK are:

1.Craigievar Castle, Alford, Scotland

2.Portmeirion, Wales

3.Tresco Abbey Gardens, Isles of Scilly

4.Oundle, Northamptonshire, England

5.Benmore Botanic Garden, Strath Eachaig, Scotland

6.Snowdon (Yr Wyddfa) from the quieter Rhyd Ddu Path, Wales

7.Howtown & Martindale, Cumbria, England

8.Lincolnshire Wolds

9.Holkham Beach, Norfolk, England

10.Marshwood Vale, Dorset

Tom Hall, VP Experience at Lonely Planet, said: “London has always dominated tourism in the UK, and for good reason, but the entire country is overflowing with historic sites and natural wonders.

"The pandemic caused us all to pause and re-evaluate how we travel, and I think now is the perfect time to update that bucket list with some of these under-the-radar places you might have overlooked in the past.”
