MAGNOX employees at the Trawsfynydd power plant have been assured that their jobs are safe for at least the coming year.

The power plant, which was decommissioned in 1993, is a big employer in the area.

However last week the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority announced that Magnox’s contract to clean up 12 nuclear sites, including Trawsfynydd, was to be halted following “a significant mismatch” between the work that was quoted and the work that actually needs to be done.

The Cavendish Fluor Partnership has subsequently pulled the 14-year contract worth £6.1b.

However this should have no bearing on the current employees in the Meirionnydd power plant, at least for the time being.

“There is no change to Magnox funding for the coming year and it is very much ‘business as usual’ as we continue the work of safely closing all our sites,” a spokesperson for Magnox said.

“We are continuing to make progress at the Trawsfynydd site.

“We recently started retrieving fuel-element debris from the North vaults for the first time, and we are also making good progress on demolition of the administration complex.”
