Madam,

Chris Scheon, (Cambrian News, 15 November) should get his facts right before accusing the Welsh Government of funding councils on the basis of the number of Labour councillors they have, for he is merely propagating fake news.

A complicated formula is used to allocate funding to councils, which involves many factors including population and certainly doesn’t take into consideration the politics of the councillors.

An example of this is that this year Flintshire is facing a larger cut than Gwynedd despite the fact that the largest group of councillors there is Labour.

Last year Gwynedd received several million pounds extra from the Welsh government to help invest in hard-pressed public services, but the council decided to put much of it into its reserves and awarded their mainly Plaid Cymru councillors an increase in allowances, despite independent councillors tabling a motion to decrease allowances.

Earlier this year, Ken Skates, the Welsh Government transport minister, visited Barmouth to meet local people and was so enthusiastic about the multi-million-pound proposal for a new link to Barmouth bridge that he offered considerable advice to the local Plaid Cymru councillor on how Gwynedd might bid for Welsh Assembly money to support the project.

Yet another example of the Welsh Labour government showing interest in investing in a non-Labour council. Let us see what the council is willing to do about this.

Yours etc,

Roger Duke, Friog.
