A SITE to provide five pitches for travellers needs to be found in the Machynlleth area, a Powys County Council planning document says.
The council’s Local Development Plan working group will meet on Thursday, 25 August, as part of efforts to address issues for the LDP, one of which is the need for a traveller site in the Machynlleth area.
A council spokesperson said an assessment had found the five-pitch site was necessary, but admitted the process was still at the early stages and that it could take years before any site is ready to be opened.
The spokesperson said: “The site is for identified people. An assessment has identified the need for accommodation. It’s for a family of travellers.
“As they’re the same family the pitches need to be on the same site to allow them to live as a family.
“It’s too early for there to be any preferred site. We’re still actively seeking a site in the Machynlleth area.
“We have sought expressions of interest and we’re reviewing the responses and then we would come up with a preferred site.
“It’s still a long way to go. We’re still in the infancy of the project.”
A similar site opened in the Brecon area took around four years to be opened.
