Madam,

I was pleased to read Elizabeth Phillips’ letter suggesting growing vegetables on the Aberystwyth maze site (‘Charity veg plot idea for town centre ex-maze site’, letters page, Cambrian News, 25 July 2019).

Back in October 2017, in response to the Cambrian News coverage of the site’s issues, I asked my Permaculture course students to create some designs for future, sustainable use.

The participants interviewed passing members of the public, assessed the site on the ground and came up with innovative, multipurpose designs that would not only produce food but also beauty, shelter, community space and biodiversity.

This was a far cry from the single-use options that were being proposed for the site at the time.

Sadly, no-one from Aberystwyth Town Council was available to witness the students’ presentations, but I would be most happy to help with any initiatives to revisit the site and see what might be possible for the benefit of the whole community, as well as visitors.

Yours etc, Dr Angie Polkey Swyddffynnon.
