The third annual Old Boys football match was held in memory of Aberystwyth hotelier Mike Fisher.

WHBFC and FCLMA Old Boys team played a charity football match against each other on Saturday, 7 November for the third year in a row.

The money raised was donated to the British Heart Foundation.

The match was held in memory of Mike Fisher, owner of the Cambrian Hotel and Le Figaro, who died in 2017, aged 67.

James Naik, 32, was the captain for WHB FC during the match, he said: “We were all Aberystwyth University students, some of us around 10 years ago. After Mike passed away, we had a contact from the other team because Mike used to sponsor both of us.”

Jay Tear, who plays for FCLMA, organises the match every year. The captain of FCMLA, Josh Banks, 26, paid tribute to his efforts.

“He was one of the guys who used to work at the Cambrian Hotel, he is still really close to Mike’s family. He has done all the work and organisation for the charity game.

"Everyone really does appreciate his efforts, we always enjoy coming back to Aberystwyth to commemorate Mike. And without all Jay’s efforts it wouldn’t be possible.”

Most of the players for both teams have now moved away, but used to attend Aberystwyth University.

Both football teams were sponsored by Mr Fisher, and many players worked in the Cambrian Hotel.

Josh Banks said: “I think it shows a lot that, even three years after his passing, we’re spread out over the world, London, Manchester, one of the boys is even living in Vietnam, but we all come back for this.

"It’s a tribute to Mike and his family. We only knew him for a short time but he always helped out the team and employed a lot of the boys at the Cambrian Hotel.”

This year FCLMA won 5-3 on penalties.
