THE county council’s controversial contract with landscapers is once again under scrutiny after it emerged the company is not required to dispose of cut grass.

The situation of uncut grass in Machynlleth was labelled a “disaster” last month after Powys County Council admitted there had been “significant complaints” from across the county due to issues with their new landscaping contractors.

The issue appeared to have been resolved after landscapers turned out in large numbers in the town to cut the overgrown areas of grass.

But the council has confirmed this week that contractors are not employed to collect and dispose of the cut grass after it emerged Machynlleth councillors were carrying out the work themselves at their own expense.

Cllr Michael Williams told the Cambrian News this week that he and town councillor Dai Speake spent six hours filling and disposing of several trailers-full of grass.

“The council has given out the grass cutting contract but it is just for cutting it, not disposing of it,” Cllr Williams said.

Powys County Council confirmed the contract was only to cut the grass and not to clear it.
