A summer of fundraising has raised nearly £7,000 for a cancer charity.

Throughout July, a number of local fundraisers took part in the Big Walk, which aimed to raise funds and awareness for Prostate Cymru.

With several big events cancelled over the last 18 months due to Covid and charities missing out on vital funding, the Big Walk was set up to help boost funding for the charity.

Fundraisers of all abilities were encouraged to walk 26 miles in July instead of the annual 26-mile big walk that is held annually in Cardiff.

In total, walkers in Ceredigion raised a grand total of £6,720 – with £2,800 of that being raised by Penparcau county councillor.

Russell Hughes-Pickering from Ceredigion Friends of Prostate Cymru, said: “I would like to thank everyone for their support and the donations made during the month.

“The will help Prostate Cymru fund important research and support services that ensure men suffering with prostate diseases will have access to the best available treatments from the NHS in Wales.”

Prostate cancer affects one in eight men in Wales, one in three if there is a family history and 17 per cent more men will get prostate cancer than men in England. In number terms, 8900 are diagnosed each year, 500 die from prostate cancer and it is the second highest killer after lung cancer.

Cllr Steve Davies has also thanked the local community and local businesses for their help in helping him raise a remarkable £2,800 for the cause.
