COUNCIL chiefs have urged people on the coast to be on their guard when a storm hits on Saturday.

The Met Office have issued a yellow — ‘be aware’ — warning of “unseasonably strong” winds accompanied by heavy showers from 7am tomorrow, coinciding with a spring high tide of 5.1m between 9.24am and 10.13am, causing the potential for “large waves” on the exposed coastline.

A Ceredigion County Council spokesperson said: "Over the weekend Ceredigion County Council would urge the public to take care along the coastline particularly if they’re planning to walk the Ceredigion coast path or participate in any activities on beaches.

"Take heed of any warnings issued and look out for red flags on Ceredigion’s lifeguarded beaches which indicate that it is dangerous to bathe or swim, and seek advice from the lifeguards. Also beware of high spring tides this weekend.

"The council will continue to monitor the situation along with our professional partners.”

The Met Office warns: “A spell of unseasonably strong southwesterly winds, accompanied by heavy, blustery showers, is expected to develop across the south of the UK later today.

“Winds will peak early on Saturday through the Bristol Channel area, before slowly transferring east across the south of England. Additionally the strongest winds will lead to large waves around exposed coastlines.

“Gusts of 40-45mph inland, and 50 to very locally 60mph along exposed coastlines, are expected. Please be aware that these may lead to disruption to transport, and in view of the time of the year there is increased potential for disruption to outdoor activities.”
