Madam,
Referring to the pieces on Llanbedr’s proposed bypass, what about the beautiful areas which Gwynedd County Council proposes to slash through for a bypass.
The area includes copses, hillside grazing for many sheep, gorse, fine stone walls, log cabins, a rivulet which is being turned into a water feature, an ageing avenue of sycamore and towering trees from an ancient forest, and the lagoon and river.
Like Dafydd Elis-Thomas, people of Llanbedr are almost universally in favour of the proposed airfield access road to the west of the village.
It will siphon off much of the traffic and it will protect the village high street from the open surf which in a few years’ time will prevail, as is forecast officially. The rising sea levels already crossed the road with immense damage a year ago, repaired by four days’ helicopter-based dumping just to close a small gap.
What we need is to encourage visitors to dawdle around our area, enjoy its outstanding beauty, and spend their money. We don’t need them to belt out from Brum, belt past us and belt back to Brum.
The county council should consider what happened with similar daft development plans for Old Fishguard 30 years ago. Billy the Box, the local undertaker, and his companions stopped the scheme even after parliamentary approval had been given. We have the same determination.
Yours etc,
Graham Tottle, secretary of SLVSSB – Save Llanbedr Village, Stop the Southern Bypass.
