Work has begun to build a new path between Bow Street and the Aberystwyth University IBERS campus at Plas Gogerddan, near Penrhyncoch.

The shared use path for cyclists and pedestrians is being constructed by a local contractor.

The work is grant funded by the Welsh Government with match funding provided by Ceredigion County Council and is expected to be completed by the end of March.

Wildlife habitat areas and replanting have been incorporated within the scheme, after concerns were raised during the planning phase.

Once completed, this section of the path will provide a safer route for pedestrians and cyclists between Plas Gogerddan, where a major new multi-million pound campus is being developed and the Transport for Wales project in Bow Street.

The ambitious Bow Street plans will provide a new public transport interchange and railway station in the village and is scheduled to open in spring 2020.

Cllr Dafydd Edwards, the Cabinet member responsible for highways and environmental services, said: “As a council, one of our main priorities is ensuring the safety of the public and with this new path it will increase safety and accessibility.

“This new path will increase cycle usage in the area.”

The council will continue to work in partnership with Aberystwyth University on the Phase 2 proposals to progress the shared use path towards Penrhyncoch in the next financial year.
