THE hopes and aspirations of young farmers, especially in light of challenges facing the farming industry such as Brexit, was the topic of discussion when Dwyfor Meirionnydd MP Liz Saville Roberts toured farms in her constituency.
The Plaid Cymru MP was led around farms in the Trawsfynydd area by the FUW.
It was an excellent opportunity for dialogue, with reference to FUW work and policies and with particular emphasis on inviting views from the younger generation of farmers in the formation of FUW policy.
Mrs Saville Roberts said: “It was a pleasure to visit farms in the Trawsfynydd area at a time of real concern for many farmers across the constituency with uncertainty over Brexit, future funding and agricultural policies in general.
“The discussion focussed on the current state of the agricultural industry in Wales and the future of Welsh Government funding for agriculture especially schemes such as Glastir and the low prices for lamb from hill farms.
“The opportunity to talk to young people who are really enthusiastic about the future of agriculture and their Welsh speaking communities was invaluable and I was encouraged by their enthusiasm for the industry.”
Geraint Davies, FUW Meirionnydd county chairman, said: “This was a great opportunity to hear at first hand the concerns of our younger members.
“Their views are extremely important to us, and we urge them to fully participate in our meetings in future, since we are talking about their future.’
“We are extremely grateful to Liz Saville Roberts for spending the day with us, and hope similar arrangements can be replicated in other areas in the near future.”
