CHARITY walkers crossed the Dyfi Estuary by boat on Thursday on their way from Bethlehem in Carmarthenshire to Denbighshire’s Yr Aifft, which is Welsh for Egypt, to raise awareness about the struggles refugees are facing.

The Christian Aid walk, which started on Sunday, 4 December, included a boat crossing from Ynyslas to Aberdyfi, where a special service was held by Bishop of Bangor Andy John.

The walk started in Bethlehem and took to Lampeter, Blaenpennal, Aberystwyth and Ynyslas, before crossing to Aberdyfi by boat and then going on to the Centre for Alternative Technology near Machynlleth, Brithdir, Llanuwchllyn and Bala before continuing on to Yr Aifft.

Mid and West Wales regional AM Eluned Morgan was one of the participants in the 140-mile walk saying that she wanted to take part to help raise awareness and raise money to help refugees who have been forced from their homes.

She said: “At Christmas time, people celebrate the birth of Christ, but forget that he too was a refugee and had to escape from his home country.

“This walk is a timely reminder for people to really think about the true meaning of Christmas and the need to reach out to vulnerable refugees across the world.”
