A 200-YEAR-OLD pound note issued in Ceredigion in the early 19th century has sold on an auction site for £117.
The rare one pound promissory note (pictured) was issued by the short-lived ’Aberystwith & Tregaron Bank, Cardiganshire’ in December 1813.
The note, signed by Joseph Jones - a member of the bank along with John Evans of Penygraig, Aberystwyth and William Davies - sold on internet auction site eBay for £117 last week.
The Aberystwith and Tregaron Bank was established at Aberystwyth at the beginning of the 19th century and was locally known as ‘Banc y Ddafad Ddu’ (The Bank of the Black Sheep) because the bank notes were imprinted with an engraving of a black sheep.
The bank opened a branch in Tregaron in 1810, but folded in 1815 when it went into liquidation.
