A MACHYNLLETH man is “devastated” after he was stopped for drink-driving when a police officer suspected he had been speeding.
Owen Glyn, of Cynffyrch, Derwenlas, pleaded guilty to drink-driving when he was stopped in the early hours of 31 October.
Prosecutor Ellie Morgan said a police officer parked near the entrance to the Maes Ceilo estate entrance at Bow Street saw Glyn, 22, driving past at a speed the officer believed was over the limit.
He followed Glyn, who Ms Morgan said was still speeding, and eventually stopped him in Talybont. When the officer spoke to Glyn, he smelt alcohol with Glyn then failing a roadside breath test.
A later test at Aberystwyth Police Station showed that Glyn had 50 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35.
Defence solicitor Janem Jones said Glyn, who is a data analyst at Penweddig School, couldn’t explain why he had decided to drink after working late.
She said Glyn had been working until around 2am and had then drunk three pints, but hadn’t eaten before deciding to drive. Ms Jones said Glyn had never been in trouble before.
She said: “Why he did it, he doesn’t know. He is absolutely devastated at being here today.”
Glyn was banned from driving for 12 months, but will also pay a fine of £280, costs totalling £113 and a court charge of £150.
