DRINKERS were left trapped in a cocktail bar on Friday night when police shut down a section of Aberystwyth town centre for several hours after concerns for the safety of a resident said to be in a “distressed” state.

Part of Terrace Road as well as Corporation Street and Bath Street were closed off by police for over two hours from just after 5pm.

The street closures caused problems for people trying to get to the Commodore Cinema in Bath Street.

And Sam Taylor, one of the owners of The Libertine in Terrace Road said that drinkers were told “not to leave” the cocktail bar, and that new customers were not allowed in for several hours while the police cordon was in place.

“Customers all got to stay inside, so we didn’t have to evacuate - but no one new was allowed in,” he said.

“We were told nothing at all, other than to stay inside.

“Whatever it was, police were treating it seriously as even staff members were not allowed to go in.”
