A GWYNEDD man who wanted to get home after a night out had entered an occupied house at Pwllheli through an unlocked door and took the keys to a van, a court heard.
Unemployed electrician Gareth Jones, 24, of Lôn Isaf, Morfa Nefyn, was jailed for 11 months and banned for 12 months.
He admitted burglary, taking a vehicle, driving while disqualified, and fraud when he bought diesel for £25 at a Betws y Coed filling station.
Caernarfon Crown Court was told the van had a tracking device and had been stolen at 2am on May 20.
Prosecutor Karl Scholz said two drills valued at £379 were not recovered.
Ryan Rothwell, defending, said Jones had wanted to get home and went in the house. “He shows genuine remorse for what he has done,” counsel said.
The defendant described himself as “totally stupid.”
Recorder Peter Rouch QC told Jones: “I am told you want to change your ways. At 24, having received your first custodial sentence, this is your opportunity.”
