New Quay and Aberystwyth Coastguard rescue teams came together last week to save a dog who was left stranded in a “precarious position” on a cliff edge on the New Quay coast on Bank Holiday Monday, sparking warnings from the Coastguard over dog safety.

The two rescue teams were called out at around 9pm on Monday night following reports that a dog gone over the cliff at Rock Street.

The teams were supported by members of the New Quay RNLI Inshore Lifeboat and fire personnel from New Quay fire station.

The dog, Cody, was rescued using a rope and was unharmed, rescue teams said.

A New Quay Coastguard spokesperson said: “At 9.01pm on Monday, 31 August, New Quay Coastguard Rescue Team were tasked to Rock Street, New Quay following reports of a dog over cliff.

“Cody, the dog was quickly located in a precarious position on the cliff face.

“Following a careful assessment of the restricted working area in the garden, New Quay Coastguard Rescue Team together with Aberystwyth Coastguard Rescue Team proceeded with a rope rescue.

“New Quay RNLI inshore lifeboat and New Quay fire service were also tasked to provide back up support.

“Cody was brought back up from the cliff safely to his owner unharmed to live to tell another dog’s tale.”

New Quay Coastguard Rescue Team said the incident, although no harm came to Cody, is “a reminder of the dangers that cliffs pose to even the most well-trained dogs.”

“If on or around cliffs, please keep dogs on a lead and well away from the cliff edge,” the team said.
