THE ambulance service is asking revellers to stay safe ahead of ‘Mad Friday’.

The Friday before Christmas is traditionally a busy one for pubs and the emergency services alike, with a spike in admissions to A&E.

Richard Lee, the Welsh Ambulance Service’s director of operations, said: “As we approach the festive season we are asking people to use us wisely.

“We are not killjoys, but every year we see a number of 999 calls to attend alcohol-related incidents at Christmas celebrations.

“We are providing additional resources in some areas, but we would ask you to help us by taking care of your friends and colleagues by making sure everybody gets home safely from your office party or night out.

“Make sure you know how you and your party are getting home and wear appropriate clothing for the cold and wet weather. We wish you all a very happy Christmas.”

Meanwhile, the fire service is supporting a police Christmas campaign to raise awareness of the dangers of drink and drug driving.

Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol are two of the main causes of fatal road traffic collisions in Wales, and the emergency services have teamed up to deliver a simple message to those considering such actions — don’t.

Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service’s head of protection and prevention, Mydrian Harries, said: “Never take the risk to drive under the influence of drugs or alcohol as the consequences could be fatal.

“Not only is this behaviour irresponsible, but there is absolutely no excuse for putting yourself, and others at risk.

“If you have plans to go out then make sure that you arrange for safe transportation home as part of those plans.

“If you go out and end up having a drink when you did not plan to, just get a taxi home. People often do not realise the affects that alcohol and drugs can have on your senses and think that it is ‘okay’ to drive after ‘just a few’. It is not.

“If you have been drinking, please be aware that you may still have alcohol in your system the following day which can affect your driving ability and be against the law.

“If you are unsure about whether or not you are safe to drive, visit Think UK’s website for further information.

“We do not want you, your friends, or family to end up as another road traffic death statistic; we want you to arrive alive.”
