AN ABERYSTWYTH school has been forced to put “extra security precautions” in place after thieves made off with over 30 metres of lead from the building’s roof over the Christmas holidays.

At least 30 metres of lead measuring 12 inches wide was stolen from the roof of St Padarn’s primary school sometime between Saturday, 23 December, and Sunday, 7 January.

The school’s headteacher Geoff Davies said that security precautions, including new overnight lighting that reacts to movement will be put in place “to prevent further loss of lead”.

“We’ve never had anything like this happen here,” Mr Davies told the Cambrian News.

“You just don’t expect this kind of thing to happen in a school in the middle of town.

“It’s very strange, but is a sign of the times, people are desperate.

“It hasn’t affected the running of the school in any way, apart from having to put an insurance claim in to replace the lead.

“We are just stressing that the extra security will hopefully mean we can stop this sort of thing happening again.”

The school has remained open since the return from the Christmas break for pupils and staff on Monday, 8 January, despite the theft.
