A Trawsfynydd resident has extended his sympathies to the people who knew two people killed in a plane crash in the county last Friday.

Elfed Wyn ap Elwyn, who is also a Gwynedd councillor, said he was very sorry to hear about the deaths of two people following a light aircraft collision in Gwynedd.

Shortly after midday on Friday, 14 August, North Wales Police said they received reports that a light aircraft travelling from an airfield in England had not arrived at Caernarfon airport as scheduled. The plane was found near Trawfynydd and two people were pronounced dead at the scene.

A spokesperson for North Wales Police said: “Multi-agency air and ground searches were carried out and the aircraft was found in a remote location near to Trawsfynydd.

“The two people on board were sadly pronounced deceased at the scene.

“The Air Accidents Investigations Branch (AAIB) have been made aware of the incident and have deployed a team of investigators.”

Chief Superintendent Owain Llewellyn from North Wales Police said: “Our thoughts are with the families and friends of those involved in this tragic incident.

“We will support the AAIB with their investigation to ensure the circumstances leading to this incident are fully understood.

“This has been a challenging search operation and I am grateful to all of the agencies involved for their professionalism and dedication.”

A spokesperson for the Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) said: "An investigation has been launched and a multidisciplinary team of inspectors are on their way to the accident site."

Mr ap Elwyn, who represents Bowydd and Rhiw but lives in Trawsfynydd, expressed his sympathies to those who know the two people killed in this crash.

Speaking to the ‘Cambrian News’, he said: “It is tragic to hear that people have lost their lives, and I'm very sorry to their families.

“It also brings me back to the helicopter crash, which happened nine years ago on the Rhinogydd, which claimed four lives as well.

“My deepest sympathies."
